Back in August of 2007, I experienced my first of so far two flat tires on my 2004 R1150RT Beemer. It has tubeless tires, and both flats were on the rear tire. Here’s my experiences with that first one, some lessons learned and what I now carry in terms of a tire repair kit. Perhaps, it’ll help you prepare for a flat tire of your own.
I grabbed my baseball bat and ran into the bar to call the police. Afterwards, I ran back out, waving the bat around. By this time, Jason was on top of the Tow Truck Services, with the angry mob circling below him. Someone had thrown a beer bottle, and we would later discover that in the chaos my brother lost a toolbox full of expensive tools.
The best thing to do is to avoid this situation entirely! If you have an accident, the first thing that you should do is call your insurance company. You will probably be panicking, but the last thing you should do is allow a tow-truck driver convince you that you have to use their services. Keep your insurance company’s telephone number in your car or in your wallet, so that you don’t need to search for it after an accident. Once you call your insurer, they will send an authorised towing company to the accident scene. Your vehicle will then be towed directly to a panel-beater who is linked to your insurance company. This means that the towing and storage costs will all be covered by your insurance claim.
Get cash before the car is released. A company that is honest will send payment with the Towing Services driver, or you will have the money wired to a bank of your choosing. If the car buying service suggests they want to pay you in another week, you should start to ask questions.
It was a Saturday night and I still remember it vividly. It was cold and snowy outside and the ground was covered with over 8 of inches of snow and ice.
August 7, 2007: Well, I suppose it had to happen sooner or later with all the riding I do. I am pleased and fortunate that it happened as it did and not out in the middle of nowhere but during today’s commute to work.
Another way to practice safe driving is to avoid distracted driving. More drivers than ever are talking or texting on cell phones while on the road, creating risky situations for everyone. You can educate yourself on this growing trend by reviewing these driving statistics and learning ways to avoid driving while distracted.
This time she was arrested and charged with DUI, negligent driving and thrown in the slammer. I am very thankful to that alert officer. That woman is lucky she didn’t hurt or kill someone that night. Let’s hope she won’t be getting behind the wheel again anytime soon.
