In low-income countries, it is primarily due to unregulated antibiotic use and poor sanitation, while in high-income countries, it is fueled by antibiotic overuse in farming, veterinarian care, and healthcare.

The World Health Organization’s classification of antibiotics into three groups—access, watch, and reserve—is crucial in preventing antimicrobial resistance. However, the study found that while first-line access resistance is declining or stabilizing in high-income regions, lower-resource settings are seeing a sharp rise in resistance to critical watch and reserve drugs. This highlights the need for global surveillance systems to track and identify resistance, and for better access to diagnostic techniques and first-line antibiotics in low-income countries.
